Newsletter 6th August, 2019

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Most loving God,
We thank you for the example of
St Mary MacKillop,
who in her living of the Gospel
witnessed to the human dignity of each person.
She faced life’s challenges
with faith and courage.
We pray through her intercession
for all of our needs
We make this prayer through Jesus the Lord.

St Mary MacKillop Mass

To celebrate the feast of Australia’s first Saint, Mary MacKillop, students from Years 4-6 will be attending Mass on Wednesday 8 August at 9.00am, along with the Josephite Associates.  All are welcome.

Please keep the Year 6 Confirmation candidates and their families in your prayers as they complete their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation to be celebrated on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August.  Bishop will be here with us for both Masses.  A reminder that the Parent Child Workshop will be held this Wednesday, tomorrow, 7 August commencing at 6.00pm.

Baby Welcome

Congratulations to the Panetta family, Clair, Simon, Jax and Lyra, on the safe arrival of their beautiful daughter and sister, Estelle Joy.  She is gorgeous!

P&F Meeting

Our meeting was held this morning.  Upcoming events include organising the bar for the upcoming Quiz Night, assisting at the Bull and Barrel Festival, and Father’s Day activities.  Parents are always welcome to come along to find out all the wonderful ways our P&F supports our school.

School Board

The next meeting for our School Board is today at 5.30pm in the school staff room.

MJR Morning Tea

I enjoyed a special morning tea with Ryan, Kate, Jack and Sully recently.  It is always a delight to spend time with students and find out a little more about why they were recognised as MJR Stars.

Bishops’ Religious Literacy Tests

At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3 and Year 5 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The assessment will be accessible to students online.

Supporting Literacy Development at Home Parent Meeting

This will be held on Wednesday 14 August at 6.00pm in the School Hall.  All parents are welcome, however there will be a focus on Early Childhood.

If you would like to purchase girls shorts for the summer uniform, please place an order no later than Friday 30 August. We will be placing a bulk order to be ready for Term 4.  Please note that these items are not kept in stock and must be ordered.  There are samples in the uniform shop to try on for sizing, if needed.

Quiz Night

This Saturday night is our Quiz Night.  Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start.  This is a licensed event, so adults only, people under 18 are not permitted.  Thank you to the families who have contributed items to make up prize hampers.  We really appreciate your support.  If you have not yet brought in something to contribute towards the prizes, it’s not too late!  We are still looking for boxes of chocolates, gift cards, gourmet food items or bottles of wine.  We look forward to a fun night.  Please note that all 20 tables have been booked.  If anyone is available to help set up on Friday at 2.00pm, we will be at the hall and your help would be appreciated.

We have a blackboard that has been removed from a classroom and is now in the undercover area, if anyone would like it.  It measures 3.6m x 1.23m.

Centenary Celebrations

Memorial brick order forms need to be completed by the end of this term, so the bricks can be ordered and delivered to be arranged in the memorial garden in time for the celebrations in February next year.  Order forms are available to download (click here) or can be collected from the school office.

Father’s Day

Dads please keep the morning of Friday 30 August free for a Father’s Day breakfast.  More information to follow.

End of Year Awards and Graduation

Please save the date for our end-of-year celebration to be held at the Cathedral on Wednesday 11 December.

Last week, I was in Perth attending the Catholic Primary Principal’s Association Conference.  We listened to a fascinating presentation from Tracey Tokumana-Espinosa about how the brain works and things that impact on learning.  One point she kept returning to was that ‘the brain adapts to what it does most’.  She also made a suggestion that for every minute of screen time, a child should have the equivalent minutes of reading time before the allocation of screen time.  Memory and attention = learning, and prior experience is important.  Sleep, nutrition and physical activity are all factors that contribute to learning, as learning engages the entire physiology.

Have a wonderful week

May God bless you

Mrs Angela Hegney
